SAVE MARGARET RIVER FROM COAL MINING!

To Signatories to the Margaret River SOS Petition.
On the 21st March 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed the proposed Margaret River coal mine to be “environmentally unacceptable”. Please see the following link: EPA says no to Margaret River Coal Mine
Sadly it seems the mining company LD Operations is not taking the decision lying down and is threatening to appeal the EPA decision. This means that whilst the first battle appears won, the war is far from over. In fact the war will only be won when the Government passes legislation quarantining the Margaret River Region from all forms of mining – which is what we ask for in our petition. Until then, the region will remain under threat as there are numerous mining leases in the Margaret River Region which can be activated at any time.
The petition site will remain open therefore and continue to receive signatures. There is no question that the media and both sides of Government are monitoring the petition and we’re sure the many thousands of signatures received so far played their part in convincing the EPA and the Government that the broader community did not want the proposed coal mine to proceed. Your signatures will continue to remind the Government that it still has a further step to take – to quarantine the Margaret River Region from mining.
Thank you for your continued support.
Margaret River SOS
Margaret River, Western Australia is one of the most beautiful places on earth. World renowned for her magnificent coastline, surf and premium wines, Margaret River is one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations.
Incredibly, a mining company has applied to mine for coal (for export to India) on a site just 15 kms from the centre of town. Margaret River therefore is now in the fight of her life to stop large-scale coal mining from potentially destroying her fragile eco-system and pristine water resources forever.
Time is of the essence! We need the support and voice of as many West Australians as possible to stop a disastrous precedent being set. The Margaret River region is rich in coal and many more mines will follow once one is permitted. It will mean the end of the region, as we know it.
We all know the importance of mining to West Australia’s economy. However some places are just too beautiful to mine and should be preserved and protected for future generations to enjoy and cherish. Margaret River is one such place.
The underground coal mine proposed for Margaret River can cause the land above to subside, rock shelves to crack, swamps, watercourses and aquifers to drain away.
It can also cause methane and other gases to be released, and minerals and chemicals to be released into swamps, watercourses and aquifers.
On this petition site we ask you to play a critical role in helping to save Margaret River by petitioning the West Australian Government to immediately pass legislation to quarantine the Margaret River region from any form of mining indefinitely.
Please click on the link below and add your name to a petition that will be forwarded to the Premier and the key relevant Western Australian government departments.
You can help stop this potential social and environmental disaster before it becomes more than just a bad idea!
